Exterior Painting: Should You Spray It?

Blog

When painting the exterior of a residence, the first thing you need to ask is how you are going to get paint onto the walls. Should you use paint brushes, rollers, and extension poles? Or, should you use a spray gun system? The thing is, most people have some sort of experience with brushes and rollers. They are very easy to use. On the other hand, spray guns might seems complicated and inconvenient for many. Do you buy one? Rent one? Where do you even get a spray gun? Are they hard to use?

There are probably a lot more questions that you are asking if you have never used a spray gun system before. This article aims to answer the most frequently asked questions about using a spray gun to paint a home exterior.

Where Do I Get A Spray Gun?

A spray gun system can be bought at pretty much any home improvement or paint store. Some larger retail chains will even have user-friendly systems (if they have a paint department). The home improvement and paint stores are more likely to have rentals.

Should I Buy or Rent?

Renting is probably the way to go if this is going to be a one-off paint job. But, if you think that you will use the spray gun to paint other things, it might be worth it to buy one. Spray guns can be sued to paint much more than just the walls of a home. So, if you are interested in eventually painting your interior, some random pieces of furniture, or need to spray any other craft products, buying a gun system might be worth it.

Do I Need a Compressor or Portable System?

If you are going to rent your gun, you will probably have an easier time finding compressor-powered systems. These use compressed air to spray the paint onto the walls. However, cordless guns which are either electric and battery-powered, are also gaining traction. You will see more of these modern systems available, and some can even be part of your cordless drill set. That is, they might use the same batteries. The biggest difference between compressor guns and electric guns is the capacity. A compressor can spray more paint in a shorter amount of time. Cordless guns are more portable and lighter. When painting a whole house, a cordless system is not going to be as practical or time efficient.
